# Why ChatGPT Doesn't Recommend Your Business (And What Actually Fixes It)

AI assistants name two or three local businesses and stop. Here's why yours isn't one of them, and the order to fix it in.

Sonny Round, Co-Founder — Tailwinds Ops · September 17, 2026

## Key Takeaways

- Across 2,751 multi-location brands, ChatGPT recommended a given location 1.2% of the time, against 35.9% for Google's local 3-Pack (SOCi 2026 Local Visibility Index).
- Consumer use of AI for local business recommendations went from 6% to 45% in twelve months, on a survey of 1,002 US adults (BrightLocal).
- Locations ChatGPT recommends average a 4.3 star rating. Below roughly 4 stars, most AI tools stop considering you.
- Business websites were the most common source AI tools cited for local queries. Yelp appeared in 33% of test searches.
- 88% of AI users check what sits behind a recommendation — whether a cited review is legitimate, or where it came from.

Open ChatGPT and type the thing your best customer would type. "Best roofer in Tulsa." "HVAC company near me that does emergency calls." Most owners running that test for the first time never see their own name in the answer. The instinct is to assume something is broken. Nothing is broken. The business was never given to the model in a form it could use.

## Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business?

Because it never found enough consistent information about you to feel safe naming you. AI assistants do not rank every business and show the top ten. They pick two or three and commit. When your details conflict across the web, or your review profile is thin, the model skips you and names a competitor it can verify.

The gap between traditional search and AI search is wider than most operators expect. SOCi's [2026 Local Visibility Index](https://www.soci.ai/blog/local-visibility-benchmarks/), built on 2,751 brands and roughly 350,000 locations, found brands appeared in Google's local 3-Pack 35.9% of the time on average — and got recommended by ChatGPT just 1.2% of the time. Gemini sat at 11.0%. Being findable on Google buys you nothing here.

> **AI visibility** is how often an assistant names your business when someone asks for a recommendation. It is a frequency, not a rank. You either get named or you are invisible — there is no page two.

This stopped being a future problem sometime last year. BrightLocal's [2026 Local Consumer Review Survey](https://www.brightlocal.com/research/lcrs-ai-trust/) found the share of consumers using AI to find local business recommendations climbed from 6% in 2025 to 45%, on a panel of 1,002 US adults. ChatGPT led at 31%, Google's AI Mode at 23%. Over the same period, consumers using Google reviews dropped from 83% to 71%.

## How is an AI recommendation different from ranking in the map pack?

The map pack rewards proximity and Google-owned signals, and it hands back a ranked list. AI assistants read a wider set of sources — your website, directories, review platforms, data aggregators — and return a short answer naming a couple of businesses. Winning one does not carry over to the other. Different inputs, different output.

One caveat worth stating plainly: the Local Visibility Index measures multi-location brands, averaging about 67 locations each. It is not a study of single-shop operators, and the numbers should not be read as your exact odds. SOCi's own read on its data is that [large brands underperform local SMBs in AI results](https://www.soci.ai/blog/the-challenge-of-ai-visibility-for-brands-part-1/), because a chain's signals are scattered across hundreds of locations that do not match each other, while one business has one clean set of facts to verify. The structural advantage is yours. Most operators just never claim it.

## Where does ChatGPT actually get local business information?

Your own website first, then directories, review platforms and data aggregators. BrightLocal ran [20 searches across 10 industries](https://www.brightlocal.com/blog/ai-search-using-listings-sources/) on Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and ChatGPT Search, and business websites were the dominant source on every platform. Yelp turned up in 33% of searches. Niche directories carried real weight in specialized trades.

That is a 20-search sample published in July 2025, so treat it as directional rather than settled. The practical read still holds: **your website is the authoritative source** an AI checks first. If your site does not clearly state what you do, where you do it, and what it costs, the model has nothing solid to quote and moves on to a competitor whose site does.

## What do reviews have to do with whether AI names me?

They work as a filter before they work as a ranking factor. Locations ChatGPT recommends average a 4.3 star rating, against 3.9 on Gemini and 4.2 on Perplexity. SOCi's read is that below roughly 4 stars, many AI systems will not consider a business at all. You are not competing on a curve. You are clearing a bar or you are not in the conversation.

Review response is the other half, and it is where the average business leaves the most on the table. SOCi found the typical business responds to 46.9% of its Google reviews and 3.1% of its Yelp reviews. Responses are timestamped public text that says the business is open and paying attention — the cheapest freshness signal available, and most operators skip it.

## What should I fix first?

Start with the two things that block a recommendation outright: business data that disagrees with itself across the web, and a rating under 4 stars. Fix the name, address, phone and hours everywhere they appear. Then work the rating. Content and directory expansion come after, because neither helps if the model cannot confirm who you are.

- Run the query yourself, five or six times. AI answers vary run to run, so a single check tells you nothing. Count how often you get named.
- Audit your name, address, phone and hours across your site, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Maps and Facebook. Any mismatch is a reason for the model to hedge.
- Put your service area, services and pricing in plain text on your website — not locked inside an image, a PDF or a form.
- Get your rating above 4.0 and keep it there. Below that, the rest of this list stops mattering.
- Answer reviews on every platform, not only Google. Yelp response rates sit near zero industry-wide, which makes it cheap ground to take.
- Claim listings in the directories specific to your trade. AI tools lean on niche directories hard in specialized categories.

Worth knowing before you spend a dollar on this: 88% of AI users check what sits behind a recommendation — whether a cited review is real, or where it came from — and 97% at least sometimes verify it against actual reviews. Getting named by ChatGPT sends someone straight to your review profile. If what they find there contradicts the recommendation, you spent the visibility and lost the customer anyway.

## How do I know whether any of it worked?

Track how often you get named, not where you sit in a list. Run the same handful of prompts on a set schedule, log every appearance, and watch the percentage over weeks. Rank tracking does not transfer to AI, because the same question asked twice can return two different sets of businesses. Frequency is the only number that behaves consistently here.

We have written up the mechanics of this for specific trades. The [independent hotel version](/insights/independent-hotel-ai-search-visibility) covers a business where reviews are the whole ballgame, and the [AI adoption numbers for home service contractors](/insights/ai-adoption-home-service-contractors) cover where the trades actually sit on using this stuff. If you want the operator-level questions handled in order, the [hotel AI search FAQ](/insights/hotel-ai-search-faq) works for any local business, not only hotels. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business?

In most cases the model could not verify enough consistent information about you to name you safely. AI assistants recommend two or three businesses rather than listing everyone, so conflicting business details or a thin review profile is enough to get you skipped entirely.

### How often does ChatGPT actually recommend a given local business?

SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found ChatGPT recommended a given location 1.2% of the time, compared with 35.9% appearance in Google's local 3-Pack. That study covers multi-location brands averaging about 67 locations each, so it is a benchmark rather than your exact odds.

### Does ranking well on Google mean AI will recommend me?

No. The two systems read different inputs. Google's local pack leans on proximity and Google-owned signals, while AI tools pull from your website, directories, review platforms and data aggregators. Brands strong in one are routinely absent from the other.

### What star rating do I need for AI to consider my business?

Roughly 4.0 and above. Locations ChatGPT recommends average 4.3 stars, and SOCi's research indicates that below about 4 stars many AI systems filter a business out before relevance is even considered.

### How do I track AI visibility if results change every time?

Measure frequency instead of rank. Run the same set of prompts repeatedly on a schedule and record how often your business is named. Because AI responses are probabilistic, a single check is noise — the percentage across many runs is the signal.
