Answer Engine Optimization
When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google's AI "who's the best roofer near me?" — Answer Engine Optimization makes sure the answer is you.
The Big Shift
More homeowners are asking AI assistants for recommendations before they ever open a browser tab. "Who should I call for a leaky roof?" "Is this HVAC company reputable?" If your business isn't structured to be cited, you're invisible in the fastest-growing search channel — and your competitors are the ones being named. AEO compounds with strong SEO and with AI Consulting work that captures and converts the traffic AI sends.
The Numbers
8% vs 15%
How often users click a regular search result when a Google AI summary is on the page, versus when it isn't.
1%
How often users click a source link inside the AI summary itself.
1 billion+
Monthly active users on Google's AI Mode as of Q2 2026.
Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 Google searches from 900 U.S. adults across March 2025. When an AI summary appeared on the results page, people clicked through to a traditional search result in 8% of visits. When no summary appeared, they clicked in 15%. Source links inside the summary got clicked in 1% of visits.
Read that in the order that matters for a contractor. The click is getting cut roughly in half, and the citation inside the answer is not replacing it. So the point of AEO is not traffic. The point is being one of the two or three company names a homeowner has already heard by the time they pick up the phone. On Google's own numbers, AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly active users in Q2 2026 — that shortlist is being handed out at scale right now, and in home services almost nobody is competing for it.
Our Process
STEP 01
We map the questions homeowners ask AI about your service and your area — and what those engines currently answer back.
STEP 02
We build and structure content — FAQs, schema, entity signals — so LLMs read your business as the authoritative answer.
STEP 03
We monitor where you're being cited, in which AI engines, and expand your presence over time as the landscape shifts.
What We Optimize
Where you appear — and don't — across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews.
The high-intent questions homeowners ask AI about your service, ranked by opportunity.
When and where your brand is mentioned by name, with what context, in which engines.
Robots, schema, content structure, and entity signals that make your site easy for AI models to read and quote.
Who This Is For
Most of this page is written for roofing, HVAC and solar, because that is where we started. The same work applies to independent hotels and motels, and the gap there is wider. A March 2026 crawl of 121,425 hotel homepages found 36.3% had no structured data at all, and among the properties that did, 41.1% used the wrong schema type — telling a model they are a generic Organization rather than a Hotel. Half of all reachable properties scored zero. If you run one to three properties, that is the cheapest edge on this page. We wrote up what AI assistants actually read when a traveler asks where to stay.
Side by Side
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What you compete for | A ranked position in a list of ten blue links | A named mention inside the answer the model writes |
| Where the homeowner ends up | On your website | Often still inside the chat window |
| Unit of work | Pages built around a keyword | Passages that answer one question completely |
| What the engine reads | Relevance, backlinks, technical health | Extractable claims, schema, consistent entity signals |
| How you measure it | Rankings, impressions, organic clicks | Citation share across a fixed set of prompts and engines |
| Time to see movement | 3–6 months | 4–12 weeks, because almost no contractors are competing yet |
| Who you're up against | Every roofer ranking for your keyword | The two or three companies the model already trusts |
The overlap is real — clean schema, fast pages, and honest reviews help both. The difference is what you're optimizing the content into. SEO rewards a page that covers a topic. AEO rewards a passage that answers one question so cleanly a model can lift it out and attribute it to you. We run both together for most clients; if you're starting from zero, see the SEO service page.
Own the answer, not just the link.
Don't take our word for it — ask the engines yourself.
The Basics
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the work of getting your home service business cited inside the answers AI assistants generate. When a homeowner asks ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, or Perplexity "who's a reputable HVAC company in [city]?" or "what should I do about a leaking water heater?", AEO is what makes your business the name those engines surface.
AEO is new and separate from SEO. Traditional SEO ranks blue links; AEO shapes the structured, question-and-answer-style content, schema, and external citations that LLMs pull from when they write a response. Google's own AI features and your website docs and ongoing coverage at Search Engine Land chronicle how fast this surface is moving — we apply that playbook specifically to roofing, HVAC, plumbing, solar, pest, restoration, electrical, garage doors and other home service categories.
Why It Matters
The Bigger Picture
AEO brings new high-intent homeowners to your door — but most of them won't book on the first touch. That's where Lead Reactivation takes over: every AI-driven inquiry that doesn't close immediately becomes a CRM record we can revive into a booked job with no new ad spend. Half the homeowners in Roofing Contractor's 2026 survey said they use a search engine to find a roofer, which is exactly the moment an AI answer intercepts — the follow-up playbook for those leads is in our roofing database reactivation playbook. See how the full system fits together on the home page.

DAYS 1–14
We build a fixed set of 40 to 60 prompts a homeowner in your market would actually type — “who's the best roofer in [city]”, “is [your company] legit”, “how much does a roof replacement cost in [state]” — then run them across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode. We record three things per prompt: whether you're named, how you're described, and who gets named instead. That baseline is the scoreboard for everything after.
DAYS 15–45
Your service and location pages get rebuilt so each one answers a specific question in the first 40 to 60 words, in plain HTML a model can read without executing JavaScript. We add Service, LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema, make your name, address and phone consistent across the directories the models pull from, and put your FAQ answers in the page source instead of behind a click. Most contractor sites fail that last one without knowing it.
DAYS 46–90
We re-run the same prompt panel every month and report share of voice: what percentage of your prompts name you, which engines are moving, and which competitors are gaining. Where a gap shows up, we write the specific page or FAQ that closes it. You get one report and one call. No dashboard to babysit.
What we won't do: promise a placement. No agency controls what a language model says, and the engines change their sourcing on their own schedule. We report citation share against a fixed prompt panel so you can see the trend line honestly, including the months it doesn't move.
